When you're running a long run command and you have something else to do, the shortcut "ctrl z" will always help you about this, the command won't stop itself but keep a sleep session at background, then you may using command "bg" to invoke it and make it runing underground continually.
This command works terrfic with "nohup" so you can have full control with your remote host and free for those long time runing command.
